Cavan Biggio traded to L.A. Dodgers as Blue Jays receive minor-league reliever Braydon Fisher Back to video

When the Blue Jays decided to DFA Biggio last Thursday in the immediate aftermath of their four-game series split with Baltimore, a move that was officially announced Friday, they risked losing the utility player for essentially nothing if no suitor came forward.

At least in this scenario, the Jays acquire an actual body in Fisher.

At best, he provides depth, but don’t expect Fisher to be with the big-league club anytime soon.

In sizing up this deal, the Dodgers receive a player whom the Jays took off their 40-man roster, while L.A. loses a player it drafted in the fourth round back in 2018.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are acquiring superutilityman Cavan Biggio in a trade from the Toronto Blue Jays, sources tell ESPN.

Biggio, 29, was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays last week. He’s hitting .200/.323/.291 this year and .227/.343/.382 for his career.

The 23-year-old Fisher posted a 5.68 ERA between double-A and triple-A this season and has a 4.53 ERA across 134 pro outings (12 starts).
Recently, the Jays made a move to acquire Ryan Burr from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for cash consideration.

The triple-A right-hander made an appearance when the Orioles were in town, but would soon be shipped off to Buffalo once Bowden Francis was reinstated from the injured list.

Francis started for the Jays in the series finale against the A’s on Sunday.

Biggio, 29, joins a star-studded Dodgers lineup featuring two of the game’s best left-handed bats in Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman.

While the Jays remain in the hunt for a wild-card berth amid a very pitiful group, the Dodgers are legitimate World Series contenders.

One can easily envision Biggio used as a pinch-hit bat late in games, filling in as a defensive replacement or used as a pinch runner.

In the event of an injury or a positional player needing an off day, Biggio can play a variety of positions, save at first base where Freeman is a mainstay.

Biggio is eligible for free agency following the 2025 season.

Biggio was hitting .200 this season and .227 during six-year career with the Jays. He hit 48 home runs and had 176 RBIs during his time in Toronto, but was best known for his versatility in the field, playing several positions in the infield and outfield over his 490 games.

In his final appearance with the Blue Jays, Biggio scored the winning run in a 3-2 walk-off victory over the Orioles last Wednesday night.

When he made his Blue Jays debut in 2019, Biggio came up with fellow second-generation players in Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette.

He is the son of baseball hall of famer Craig Biggio, who played his entire 20-year career for the Houston Astros.

Despite so much hype, most of it completely unwarranted, the trio helped the club win zero playoff games.

The chances of the Dodgers winning zero post-season games is basically zero.
