Local opinion: Governor needs to rethink I-11 position

An interstate will barely even fit in the Avra Valley. To attempt to squeeze one in there would likely ruin one National Park, one National Monument, one county park, one federal mitigation land, and essentially cut off necessary wildlife connectivity between the Tucson Mountains and the Iro…

Local opinion: SCOTUS has a distressing fragrance

The “stench” is actually deeper and wider than just “politics.” It’s about power. It’s about judicial autocracy, absent any oversight or accountability to keep the Court in its own “separation-of-powers” lane.

Tucson Speaks Out: June 11 letters of the day

Letters to the Editor for June 11

Local opinion: Don't like the protests?

We send letters, we make phone calls, we make unanswered attempts to meet with our campaigning lawmakers and candidates. We do all of the things that are supposed to send a message to the top in this so-called democracy.

Arizona opinion: A looming crisis for adults with disabilities

The loss of a caregiver is the leading cause of homelessness among individuals with cognitive disabilities. This stark reality underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to support these vulnerable populations.

Gil Shapiro: “But it seemed like a good idea at the time”

As with all decisions that are essentially irreversible — and come with possible serious risks and consequences ˗˗ the choice to be tattooed or pierced should be considered carefully and thoughtfully.

Letter: Misquided opposition to Interstate 11

The depauperate eastern edge of the Lower Colorado River Valley Sonoran Desert in Avra Valley which extends to Sonora, California, and Baja California is protected in many areas. The spectacular paloverde-sahuaro Arizona Upland Sonoran Desert is protected on both sides of Avra Valley in Sahu…

Letter: REELECT LAURA CONOVER

Laura Conover is undoubtedly the most competent candidate for Pima County Attorney. She has made our county a safer place to live.

Letter: Oro Valley Library - Protector of Democracy

As a volunteer “Arizona for Abortion Access” petition circulator, I frequently stand outside the Oro Valley Library, one of the few local welcoming sites for those of us fighting to protect women from our government’s assault on personal freedom. The library maintains two “free speech” areas…

Letter: Attention Kirsten Engel

Attention Kirsten Engel: You need to be seen in order to be heard. It is time to start campaigning like you want to win. If you want to lose this upcoming election, continuing campaigning like you did last time against the Republican candidate, who won. Don't rely on the few of us who follow…

Letter: George Kelly murder trial and Mike Jette

I attended some of the recent George Alan Kelly murder trial in Nogales that resulted in a hung jury. Kelly was charged by Santa Cruz County of murdering a migrant, Gabriel Cuen Buitimea, on Kelly's ranch near Nogales in 2023. Mike Jette, who is running for Pima County Attorney, was one of t…

Letter: Too Many Lawsuits are Paralyzing Us

Editors,

Letter: Attorneys Cost Lots of Money

In Arizona I see one group of people gaining large rewards. Our legislators, elected to serve the interests of the people, are so busy trying to score against each other they aren't attending to their jobs.

Letter: Re: the June 7. article “Letter: Congressional members report Biden's cognitive decline”

I believe that cognitive decline is a possibility at any age; conversely, at no age is its presence a foregone conclusion. I recognized the symptoms in my step-father many years ago and so did he. He knew himself, and I spent a lot more time with him than the experts relied on by the author …

Letter: Solar Power - Electric Bill

We just had solar panels installed, and as we approach another summer, I’m excited to see how much our new solar panels are reducing our power bill.

Letter: UNDERSTANDING

As the fog slowly lifts, it is clear that, for years, the current Administration, the Democratic Party, the liberal media, and a number of your readers are simply schoolyard bullies. For mystifying reasons, this group has convinced their own followers, Republicans, and the general public tha…

Letter: Western option for the proposed I 11 route

I strongly oppose the western option for the I-11 project as it significantly impacts the vegetation, animals and people in the Senora desert. It is about time that we consider future generations. Many of us in Arizona came here because of the beauty in this state. We should consider in our …

Local opinion: Governor needs to rethink I-11 position

An interstate will barely even fit in the Avra Valley. To attempt to squeeze one in there would likely ruin one National Park, one National Monument, one county park, one federal mitigation land, and essentially cut off necessary wildlife connectivity between the Tucson Mountains and the Ironwood Forest Mountains.

        A note to readers

        To our readers:

Arizona Daily Star editorial: The folly of using impeachment as an outlet for political pique

An all-Republican committee of the Arizona House of Representatives has decided to call for the impeachment of Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes.

Arizona Daily Star editorial: Violent-crime trend encouraging, not cataclysmic

In a recent opEd, incomplete and therefore wildly inaccurate violent-crime data led to a bad take on Tucson and Pima County public policy. We're happy to report that Tucson's violent crime rate, while still too high, is trending in the right direction

Arizona Daily Star editorial: Indictments good for democracy in Arizona and across nation

Arizona Daily Star editorial: Arizona's indictments of "fake electors" and Trump attorneys and aides are a regrettable but necessary step toward recalibrating our fevered political landscape.

Orlando Sentinel: Do red-light cameras save lives? Florida wants to find out

Traffic cameras — those silent but implacable witnesses to driving infractions that can result in hefty fines for red-light running or speeding in a school zone — have never been all that popular with Florida residents. To many, they seem unfair: Because law enforcement is rarely present when the camera records a violation, there’s no human interaction. By the time the ticket arrives in the mail, the memory of having broken the law has faded, even though motorists usually have the ability to go online and see video of their misdeeds. And particularly in the early days of camera-monitored tickets, there were questions about tricks employed by the private vendors with contracts to run the cameras on behalf of local governments.
