Harrison County grand jury indictments include two for child endangerment (2)

A Harrison County grand jury recently handed down several indictments, including two for child endangerment after a man and a woman were arrested in connection with a drug bust at a Sanford Street home.

The grand jury indicted 41-year-old Johnathen Devon O’Neal and 38-year-old Daviesha Lanea Lewis, both of Marshall, for endangering a child in connection with a drug bust that occurred at a Sanford Street home, located in a drug-free school zone by Price T. Young Fine Arts Academy.

According to the probable cause of arrest report, on April 19, the Harrison County Violent Crime and Narcotics Task Force executed a search warrant at a home in the 1600 block of Sanford Street. After the Marshall Police Department Special Response Team cleared the house, making entry into the residence, they located Lewis and O’Neal as well as three juvenile females. A search of the home revealed various narcotics in the southeast bedroom, including four grams of suspected methamphetamine, eight grams of suspected Xanax, and five grams of Psilocybin. Firearms including an AR-15 style rifle, a 12 gauge shotgun, a .32 revolver, and a .22 caliber pistol were also found.

“Due to the fact of finding used meth pipes as well as the presence of methamphetamine in the house, it is believed that the children are being exposed to the narcotics putting the children’s health at risk,” the probable cause for arrest report states.

“1605 Sanford sits (a few) feet away from the front door of Price T. Young Elementary, making it a drug free zone,” the probable cause for arrest report pointed out.

O’Neal was additionally indicted for possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon in the case. Lewis was also additionally indicted for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. She was also indicted for cruelty of non-livestock animals in an unrelated case in which she is accused of intentionally, knowingly and recklessly killing a dog by tying the dog up and depriving it of food or water on June 18.

In another child endangerment drug-related case, the grand jury indicted Kayla Jean Thomas, 25, of Mooringsport, Louisiana, for endangering a child. According to her indictment, Thomas allegedly intentionally, knowingly and recklessly or with criminal negligence engaged in conduct that placed a child younger than age 15 in imminent danger of death, bodily injury or physical or mental impairment by possession marijuana, a dangerous drug, in the vicinity of the child and did not voluntarily deliver the child to a designated emergency infant care provider, per the Texas Family Code.

In another child endangerment drug-related case, the grand jury indicted Leslie Kay Wheeler, 43, of Marshall, for endangering child by criminal negligence. According to her indictment, on Jan. 9, Wheeler allegedly engaged in conduct that placed a child younger than age 15 in imminent danger or death, bodily injury or physical or mental impairment after the child tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine while in the defendant’s care. The indictment goes on to say the defendant did not voluntarily deliver the child to a designated emergency infant care provider, per the Texas Family Code.
