    y Situated at an altitude of 1065 mt. at the meeting pointof theVindhya and the Satpura mountain rangesamongst sylvan surroundings,Amarkantak is a greatpilgrim centre for the Hindus, and is thesource of the

    y This is a small National Park; compact, yet full ofgame. Thedensity of the Tiger population atBandhavgarh is the highest knownin India.

    This is also White Tiger country. These have beenfound in theold state of Rewa for many years. The lastknown was captured byMaharajah Martand Singh in1951. This White Tiger, Mohan, is nowstuffed and on

    display in the palace of the Maharajahs of Rewa.

    y Soaring in glittering splendour, the Marble Rocks atBhedaghatrise to a hundred feet on either side of theNarmada. The sereneloveliness of the scene is one of coolquiet, the sunlight sparklingon the marble-white pinnacles

    and casting dappled shadows on the pellucid waters. Thesewhiterocks with views of black and dark green volcanicseams are trulymajestic, and produce a magical effect onmoonlit nights.

    y The holy river flows by tranquilly flanked by thetoweringcliffs which reflect in it like a mirror the changing moodsofnature. A little distance away, it becomes turbulent as itplungesin a mighty water fall known as Dhuandhar.

    y Surrounded by the northern fringe of the Vindhyanranges,Bhimbetka lies 46 km South of Bhopal. In thisrocky terrain of denseforest and craggy cliffs, over 600

    rock shelters belonging to the Neolithic age wererecentlydiscovered. Here, in vivid panoramic detail,paintings in over 500caves depict the life of the pre-historic cave-dwellers making theBhimbetka group anarchaeological treasure, an invaluable chroniclein thehistory of man.

    y Founded by the legendary Parmar King of Dhar, RajaBhoj(1010-1053), and named after him, Bhojpur, 28 kmfrom Bhopal, isrenowned for the remains of itsmagnificent Shiva temple andCyclopean dam.

    y The temple which has earned the nomenclature of theSomnath ofthe east, is known as the BhojeshwarTemple. The temple was nevercompleted and theearthen ramp used to raise it to dome-level stillstands.

    Had it been completed, it would have had very fewrivals. As itis, even with the ravages of time, it remainsone of the bestexamples of temple architecture of the11th - 13th centuries.

    y In the temple architecture of India, the Khajurahocomplexremains unique. One thousand years ago,under the generous andartistic patronage of theChandela Rajput kings of Central India, 85temples,

    magnificent in form and richly carved, came up on onesite, nearthe village of Khajuraho. The amazinglyshort span of 100 years,from 950 AD - 1050 AD, sawthe completion of all the temples, in aninspired burstof creativity.     y Orchha's grandeur has been captured in stone, frozen in time,arich legacy to the ages. In this medieval city, the hand of timehasrested lightly and the palaces and temples built by itsBundelarulers in the 16th and 17th centuries retain much of theirpristineperfection.

    y Orchha was founded in the 16th century by the BundelaRajputchieftain, Rudra Pratap, who chose this stretch of land alongtheBetwa river as an ideal site for his capital.     y Sanchi is known for its Stupas, monasteries, templesandpillars dating from the 3rd century B.C. to the 12thcentury A.D.The most famous of these monuments,

    the Sanchi Stupa 1, was originally built by the MauryanEmperorAshoka, the then governor of Ujjayini, whosewife Devi was thedaughter of a merchant fromadjacent Vidisha. Their son Mahindra anddaughterSanghamitra were born in Ujjayini and sent to Sri

    Lanka, where they converted the King, the Queen andtheir peopleto Buddhism.

    y Shivpuri is steeped in the royal legacy of its past, whenitwas the summer capital of the Scindia rulers ofGwalior. Andearlier, its dense forests were the hunting

    y Much later, it was the Tiger that roamed the woodedhills andmany a magnificent beast was 'bagged' byroyal Shikaris. TodayShivpuri is a sanctuary for rarewildlife and avifauna. Its royalpast has thus beentransformed into a vibrant, hopeful present.

    y This colourful festival of the Bhils and Bhilalas,particularlyin the district of West Nimar and Jhabua, is actuallyin thenature of a mass svayamvara, a marriage market, usuallyheldon the various market days falling before the Holifestival inMarch. As the name of the festival indicates,

    (bhag, to run), after choosing their partners, the youngpeopleelope and are subsequently accepted as husbandand wife by societythrough predetermined customs. It isnot always that boys and girlsintending to marry eachother meet in the festival for the firsttime. In a largenumber of cases the alliance is already madebetween thetwo, the festival providing the institutionalisedframeworkfor announcing the alliance publically. The tradition isthatthe boy applies gulal, red powder, on the face of the girlwhomhe selects as his wife. The girl, if willing, also appliesgulal onthe boy's face. This may not happen immediately

    but the boy may pursue her and succeed eventually.
