I get what you guys are saying. And that also goes into a separate point about how current kids think of 90’s players as all big bruisers when it fact that And 1 dribble move style was huge across parks from the 90’s to 00’s.

I never played 2K4 but my point was more so about the league itself and how the game was played. 04 was super low scoring and super physical. Of course back then kids loved it too, but I feel like current NBA is akin to WWE’s PG era, very catered to the natural likes and tendencies of kids in general. Mix that with social media meme and fashion culture which the NBA is a social leader in, and games catering to online “create a player that’s me in a fantasy basically” gambling modes, and it’s entirely cultural. MyNBA and cold hard desire to just play a super NBA sim style game is basically alien to kids now.

Ehhh, I'm feeling so-so on this. While there's no doubt I was hyped about the Pistons championship run in '04, I can acknowledge that the vibe of the league was still very superstar driven. Kobe, T-Mac, Vince, Shaq, KG, and Duncan and that all carried down to the culture at a local level, particularly the isolation aspects of the game.

On top of that, we were in the midst of the And1 mixtape era at that time as well, which made pick-up basketball, well, excruciating at times, with dudes constantly trying to go off the heezy after dribbling the air out of the ball for 30 seconds.

Moreover, 2K4 probably isn't a great year to use for comparison, since that was the iteration (known as ESPN NBA Basketball) that was the biggest departure from everything 2K typically stood for. It's like someone up top told them to capitalize on the NBA Live arcade freestyle vibes as best they could and what we got as a result was Chauncey Billups dunking on Shaq from the free throw line.

Shout out to Lupe Fiasco for that one.

I'm on record of really missing those indie soundtracks, just because they were such a great gateway to new music, new sub-genres, and new artists. It was like a light version of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtracks. But then again, I always wished 2K would make it big, and they did, so with that comes the pop music.

That all being said, I still have a soft spot for the 2K3/SportsCenter menu music.

The power of rose-tinted nostalgia is real. lol
