Red Bull’s Max Verstappen prevailed in a tense, strategic battle with McLaren’s Lando Norris to win the Spanish Grand Prix.

Verstappen’s seventh victory in 10 races this year hinged on a decisive opening phase of the race from the Dutchman.

Verstappen was in the lead by lap three while Norris stayed stuck behind Mercedes’ George Russell for 15 laps.

It left Norris too much to do and Verstappen was able to measure his pace to control the McLaren behind.

Lewis Hamilton took his first podium finish of the year for Mercedes in third, ahead of Russell, as Britons finished second, third and fourth. Charles Leclerc was fifth, leading home Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz.

    16:23 23 June

Lewis Hamilton spoke to Sky Sports about his podium finish in Spain: "It's been a great weekend, what can I say? It's been a minute since I've had a result like this. I feel happy and light which is nice. I have great support here. A big thank you to everyone that's here and everyone who continues to stick it out with me. I was surrounded by the Ferraris which was not easy.

"Ultimately, if I got the start I wanted, I would have been closer to the two at the front.

On his move on Ferrari's Carlos Sainz: "I thought it was clean, he left the door open which I went for, I think we were wheel to wheel. I left him space as much as I could."

Lewis Hamilton, who secured his first podium of the season by finishing in third: “It’s been a solid weekend, I have to say a bigthank you to the team as they’ve been training so hard on the pit-stops and thestrategy, and they were on point.

“Unfortunately, like Lando, I got a really bad start and lostground to the Ferraris so it was a bit of a battle to get back to where I amnow. Ultimately with a better start, I don’t know if we could have held on tothe guys ahead but I don’t think we would be as far behind as we were today.”

On the race strategy: “It was never an option torun the hard tyre today so I drove the race, so a soft, medium and soft.

“All the overtakes were super close, that’s how it should beright. We bumped wheels [with Sainz], but it was fair, I left him space and itwas right on the limit."

Lando Norris, who finished second at the Spanish Grand Prix: "Not could [have won], I should have won it. I got a bad start. As simple as that. The car was incredible today, we were for sure the quickest, I just lose it in the beginning.

"Disappointed but a lot of positives. One negative and that kind of ruined everything. I know that I can just work on it for next time. It's a good amount of points, thanks to the team because the car was amazing."

On what had happened on his race start: "I'm not sure, I need a look back and review it. It was just a little bit to Max, I lost. Fair play, well done to Red Bull and Max. Another job done for them, but a bit of a shame we lost first.

"Austria and Silverstone are two of my favourite tracks. I'm excited, we're on a roll. I just need to tidy a few bits to get on top."

  9. 'It was a management race throughout' - Verstappenpublished at 15:58 23 June

Max Verstappen, who earns his third consecutive victory atthe Spanish Grand Prix: “I think what made the race was at thebeginning I took the lead on lap two and that’s where I had my buffer, and inthat first stint where I could eek out the gap a little bit. After that we hadto drive a defensive race with Lando and McLaren, they were very quick today especiallyon degradation.

“I think we did everything well, we drove an aggressive strategybut luckily it paid off until the end. Very happy to win here.”

On the start of the race: “I had to do a bit of rallyingon the straight, I had to go on to the grass a bit which lost me a bit of momentum.I braked quite late into Turn One and was then quite determined to get thelead, once I was in the lead I could look after my tyres a bit better and that’swhat made my race today.”

On how much he was on the limit: “Just managingthe tyres, they get very hot around here on the high-speed corners, you aresliding around quite a lot but it was a management race throughout.”
