Group en emphasizing urban nature and By JOHN APPLETON HOLYOKE For more than a century, the Trustees of Reservations was known throughout Massachusetts for its work to preserve some of the state's beautiful nature spots.

That brings to mind the Trustees' properties along the Atlantic shore or off in rural settings. But when the nonprofit organization opened a regional office on High Street in 2004, its staff made it clear that a big part of being in Holyoke would be an emphasis on connecting with urban youth and recognizing the value of nature in urban settings. When the office opened in October 2004, executive director Andy Kendall said it would be good to have staff close to the property the Trustees organization had purchased on Mount Tom a few years before, and was consistent with the priority of making open space more accessible to city dwellers. In the 14 months since the office opened, relations have grown between the Trustees and the children of the Boys Girls Club of Greater Holyoke, particularly those from the Lyman Terrace apartment complex, just a stone's throw from the office. There have been some trips to the 73.5 acres the Trustees of Reservations owns on Mount Tom, but these are limited because of safety concerns related to the quarrying operation going on near the property.

The Trustees' use of that property with Holyoke children will be expanding as those concerns lessen. In the meantime, Aimee Gelinas, the education specialist for the Trustees, has concentrated much of her efforts right near the children's urban neighborhood. She has been showing them photographs of scenes in downtown Holyoke, some dating back to the 19th century, prompting them to notice the changes that have taken place in the landscape, buildings, open fields and environment for animals. "The kids have loved this project. Some did not know much about Holyoke history," Gelinas said.

"They have walked by some of these sites every day and never paid attention before." Gelinas has also taken Boys Girls Club members to Mount Tom recently, and on Jan. 9, the Trustees will showcase some photographs the children took there and some pictures they have drawn based on the photos. As plans for nature trails at the Mount Tom property develop, the Trustees are getting urban children to pay more attention to the buildings, open space, canals and other features right near where they live downtown.
